신경섬유종증은 피부 및 신경계에 특징적인 소견을 나타내는 질환으로 상염색체 우성 질환이다. 다음의 7가지 임상적 특징 중 2가지 이상의 경우 진단하게 된다. 사춘기 이전에는 5 mm 이상, 사춘기 이후에는 15 mm 이상의 밀크커피색 반점이 6개 이상, 2개 이상의 말초신경섬유종 혹은 1개의 총상형 신경섬유종 동반, 홍채 과오종(lisch 결절), 골격계 이상, 시신경종, 액와부나 서혜부 주근깨, 직계가족 중 제1형 신경섬유종증을 진단받은 경우 등이 있다[1]. 제1형 신경섬유종증의 경우 악성종양의 발생 위험이 높은 것으로 알려져 있으며 두 종류의 원발종양 발생에 대한 보고 또한 다수 있으나, 세 종류 이상의 원발종양 발생에 대한 보고는 매우 드물며, 국내에는 보고된 바가 없다.
