Objective: Apolipoprotein A1 (APOA1), the major apolipoprotein of high-density lipoproteins, participates in the local transport of lipids used in myelin biosynthesis. Variation in the APOA1 gene may influence protein functioning and consequently myelin biosynthesis in the brain, leading to an increased risk for schizophrenia. Methods: We used a polymerase chain reaction-based restriction fragment length polymorphism method to determine the association of polymorphisms rs670 and rs5070 with schizophrenia in 185 Korean patients who had the disease and 179 healthy Korean control subjects. Results: Patients and controls differed significantly in terms of the genotype distributions of the G/A polymorphism (rs5070)(p=0.0102). However, we found no significant differences between patients with schizophrenia and controls in terms of the rs670polymorphism. Conclusion: Additional studies with larger samples drawn from different populations may be required to determine whether APOA1polymorphisms could be used as markers for susceptibility to schizophrenia. This study is the first to analyze the association between the single-nucleotide polymorphisms of APOA1 and schizophrenia, and the findings may contribute to further studies on the role of APOA1 in schizophrenia.
