This paper aims to clarify the influence on the invention of cinematography that exerts the chronophotography made by Etienne-Jules Marey, a French physiologist in 19th century. In 1881 Marey designs and builds his first camera, photographic gun, that makes 12 sequential images a second on a rotating glass disk. In 1888 as a result of the inadequacy of his chronophotography with superimposed images, he adopts a band of sensitized paper upon which a series of impressions has been obtained, at the rate of twenty per second. By adopting this roll film, Marey invents an apparatus that winds off a band of sensitized paper with a speed which may reach 0m, 60 per second. This camera enables him to obtain the successive impressions of a man or of an animal in motion. Eventually, Marey is the first to propose and use the roll film that is more appropriate for long series of pictures. Marey is also the first to invent the film camera that makes roll film move, and arrest during the period of exposure. Finally Marey is the first to conceive and invent the film projector.
