In the late 19th century, a significant change occurred in Western art history. Since the Renaissance, painters had pursued the accurate representation of reality in their working. In addition, the contents of picture were strictly decided according to conventional manner. But Impressionism changed these traditional customs. And this change was influenced by photography invented in 1839. With the advent of photography, artists were no longer under the burden of accurate representation of the real world. Instead, the impressionists looked at the instantly changing light of things and described it on canvas. They painted the figure of contemporary life as the camera eye took the reality itself. The Impressionism portrait painting was related with the portrait photo. Many impressionists made use of portrait photo of models instead of observing them for a long time in order to draw portrait. And most of them depicted only a part of body on the canvas when several people appeared in their pictures. This manner of expression was affected with the optical contingency of camera view. Personal portraits and portrait photos, dismemberment of body in group portraits were empirical examples that Impressionism paintings were influenced by photography. Impressionism changed the flow of Western painting, and was influenced by contemporary photography.
