Hong, H.R., Cho, J.H., Kang, H.S. Relationships of daily physical activity patterns and cardiorespiratory fitness with obesity indices and cardiovascular risk factors in elementary school boys. Exercise Science. 17(2): 223-234, 2008. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether or not daily physical activity patterns and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) were associated with obesity indices and cardiovascular risk factors in school children. A total of 18 elementary school boys (mean age 12.6±0.5 years) participated in this study. The participants' physical activities were monitored by the Intelligent Device for Energy Expenditure and Activity (IDEEA) Monitor for 24 hours, which provides times spent on performing 9 different patterns of daily physical activities such as lie, recline, transition, sit, stand, walk, step, run, and jump. We found the following results. First, the obese boys had significantly shorter sleeping times than the boys with normal weight. Second, the obese boys had significantly shorter times of dynamic physical activity pattern such as walk(p<.001), step(p<.05) than the boys with normal weight. Third, several physical activities were inversely associated with obesity indices and cardiovascular risk factors. Fourth, those relationships between daily physical activity patterns and cardiovascular risk factors were somewhat influenced by obesity indices and CRF. When synthesizing the result above, the current findings to the study suggest that increased daily dynamic physical activity patterns along with improved CRF may be important modulators in determining obesity indices and cardiovascular risk factors in the elementary school boys.
