How to define the structure of and-coordination in English has been a long debated issue in the literature. This paper proposes Holographic Structure Analysis (HSA) based on the three dimensional structure, which would give us an organized visual concept of the structure of and-coordination without the need of attaching any superfluous stipulations to the established Phrase Structure Rules in the government and binding (GB) framework. According to HSA, a sentence in S-structure consisting of conjunction ‘and’ is the final result of the derivation from more than two underlying structures in D-structure. The highlight of this paper is that it solved the problem in regard of the head of and-coordination phrases by attributing the role of “Holographer” to the conjunction ‘and’, which is assumed to extend the traditional two dimensional plane of linearity and hierarchy into three dimensional planes containing the conjunct clauses in parallel.
