This study aims to examine the technical requirements and restrictions of the two main audiovisual translation methods, dubbing and subtitling, using the translated DVD version of the Korean film, Memories of Murder. Memories of Murder is a critically acclaimed Korean film, well-received by domestic and foreign film critics alike. A common comment in many critical reviews and blog reviews about the film is that the translated version of the DVD is quite awkward and lessens the quality of the film itself. The Korean source text dialogue of the film will be compared with the translated English language subtitles and dubbing on the released DVD of the film. This study will examine the pedagogical implications of translating Korean film into English. The training of competent translators with the ability to render all the subtleties of the source language is urgently needed due to the increase in the export of Korean films and dramas. This research will also provide analysis regarding the technical requirements and restrictions of dubbing and subtitling, particularly the translation of Korean film into English. This will allow for better translated cultural contents and may direct future research into the translation of Korean films.
