Variances of the sample mean, the sample midrange and the sample median in the generalized uniform and truncated arcsine distributions are derived and the small sample properties of their variances are numerically compared with each other.1. Introduction The sample midrange and the sample median have been widely applied as the oldest and simplest measures of location. The sample midrange completed lacks in robustness to outliers. However, it is optimal for uniform population and retains good properties for the symmetric finite range distribution. The efficiency of the sample median are good for small sample size. David(1963) considered the properties of the sample mean among the extreme normal order statistics. Fan(1991) considered a property of the order statistics of the uniform distribution and variance of the sample midrange as a special case in trimmed means. Woo and Ali(1998) considered small sample properties for variances of the sample midrange and the sample median in few asymmetric distributions. In this paper, we shall derive variances for the samlpe mean, the sample midrange and the sample median in the generalized uniform and the truncated arcsine distributions and small sample properties for their variances are numerically compared with each other.2.
