The current research in the innovation literature demonstrates that a cross-functional teamis a critical factor for successful new product development. However, little research has beendone to investigate cultural aspects for successful new product development, including theinteraction between the level of cross-functional team activity and cooperative culture. Basedon an empirical study using a sample of 542 Korean manufacturing firms, this paper revealedthat both the level of cross-functional team activity and the level of cooperative culturepositively affect the efficiency and the effectiveness of new product development. Furthermore,this study also found that the interaction between cross-functional team activity andcooperative culture significantly affects the efficiency and the effectiveness of new productdevelopment. By integrating knowledge of the entire process of new product development andminimizing the problems in the manufacturing process, cross-functional team activity andcooperative culture enable organizations to increase the effectiveness of new product and toreduce development cost and duration. This study also showed that the role of cross-functionalteams and cooperative culture are more influential when organizational size is large, whichrepresents the complexity of an organization.
