Phonetic accommodation refers to the process by which a speaker acquires the acoustic-phonetic characteristics of another speaker during verbal interactions (Babel, 2009). Recent research has suggested that language distance among interlocutors (that is, whether two talkers share the same L1 or not) plays a key role in determining the extent of phonetic accommodation (e.g., Kim, 2012; Lewandowski, 2012). Previous studies, however, have produced conflicting results, one study showing greater convergence for speaker pairs of closer language distance (Lewandowski, 2012), and another showing divergence for closer language distance (Kim, 2012). In the present study, we present evidence that the language proficiency of interlocutors is an important factor that may reconcile these contradictory results. A total of 24 speakers participated in this study: 8 Korean speakers with high English proficiency, 8 with low English proficiency, and 8 native English speakers. Participants were matched into pairs, controlling for language proficiency as well as language distance. Spontaneous conversational speech was elicited by having the speakers participate in Diapix tasks (Van Engen et al., 2010). Patterns of phonetic convergence were estimated by subtracting similarity judgment scores across word-reading tasks and Diapix tasks. Statistical analyses showed that, independent of language distance, interlocutors’ English proficiency exerted a significant influence on phonetic convergence patterns. The implication of the current findings is that a more adequate model of phonetic accommodation needs to take into consideration not only interlocutors’ language distance per se, but also their proficiency in the target language.
