While previous studies about second language writing have mainly focused on methods employing grammar correction and effective feedback, studies about cohesion, which is regarded as a critical element of writing, have been under-researched. To explore how Korean learners use cohesion in order to develop connections between sentences and paragraphs, 76 university freshmen who took a mandatory English reading and grammar course participated in this study. Also, whether or not the participants' proficiency level influenced their usage of cohesion was examined. Participants submitted two essays during the semester and filled out a questionnaire at the end of the semester. This study analyzed the differences and similarities, in terms of cohesion, between native English speakers' writing and Korean learners' writing, and between the writing of higher level participants and lower level participants. The results showed that the mean differences between native speakers and the participants were statistically significant, but those between higher and lower level participants were not statistically significant, apart from the usage of connectives. The findings are expected to give language teachers guidelines for teaching paragraph structures and cohesion.
