This study investigated acoustic-phonetic characteristics of read versus conversational English speech, with a focus on analyzing two segmental properties, i.e., voice onset time and formant frequencies of English stop consonants and vowels, respectively. The segments in question appeared inside a total of 49 English minimal pairs (e.g., /cold/ vs. /gold/ and /sheep/ vs. /ship/). The conversational style of the minimal pairs was produced by native English speakers and Korean learners of English as they were involved in a spontaneous dialogue to achieve a common goal, known as the Diapix Task in the literature (Kim, Horton, & Bradlow, 2011; Van Engen et al., 2010). The participants produced the same set of speech materials in a more careful reading style as well. Two major findings are reported. First, for native speakers of English, the mean VOTs of word-initial voiceless stops were shorter when the stops were produced in conversations compared to the corresponding VOTs in reading lists. This pattern was not observed among Korean learners of English. Second, for both native English speakers and Korean learners of English, there was no significant difference between the vowel space (defined by F1 x F2) in conversational and reading-aloud settings. Implications that the current findings have for the studies of conversational vs. read English speech by native speakers and Korean learners of English are discussed.
