This study attempts to investigate an influence chain between the EU and its member states by looking at discursive configuration process of immigration policy. The research question is “how politicization and securitization discourses on EU - and member state - levels impact upon Common EU Immigration Policy.” The medium of analysis is immigration discourses such as academic papers covering EU immigration policies, official documents and media documents. This study considers discourse analytic approaches as the theoretical framework, since it explores the ideological structures behind the discourse which represents political, economic, socio-cultural aspects of the certain social grouping. Subsequently, this study selected a discourse analysis as a methodology which could cope up with the complexity of immigration. The results show that the UK, France and Germany presented immigration agenda in a different manner. However, in 1970s, immigration discourse had become closely connected with national security discourse, and then it became an issue causing the discrepancy of policy implementations between the political parties in each nation. The finding of this study claims that EU level immigration discourse can be regarded as a reproduction of domestic political discourse of these EU member states. Thus, this paper suggests the EU should consider and revise the underlying factors of establishing EU immigration policy and policy-making process in a careful manner.
