This paper describes a study that investigated the effects of English practice using Kakao Talk text chatting on the spoken English of EFL university students. The study followed 20 students in an experimental group and 19 in a control group. The participants in the experimental group practiced English using Kakao Talk text chatting at least three times a week outside of the classroom, while those in the control group did not. All participants took pre- and post-study oral English tests. The results of the pre-study test showed no statistically significant mean difference between the two groups. However, the post-study test showed that the means of the experimental group significantly increased over those of the control group. In addition, most participants in the experimental group responded very positively to a questionnaire regarding the use of Kakao Talk text chatting to practice English outside of the classroom. The findings of the study suggest that Kakao Talk text chatting could be used as a way to practice English in an EFL context.
