This study analyzes Serbian and Romanian oral folk tales in terms of ‘formal structure’, compares them with other peoples’ oral folk tales in terms of general characteristic and thus looks into their formal features with regards to ‘typicality’ and ‘variability’. The ‘episode’ which is a unit conferring an ideal style of expression, or individual and formal features of an oral folk tale, is a concept that corresponds to the ‘formula’ of an oral folk tale. In terms of form, ‘episodes’ are basic units composing an oral folk tale, while ‘formulas’ are basic units composing an oral poem. The narrators of oral folk tales combine the various events into a story, much like the way singers of oral poetry incorporate structural styles of expression, such as ‘formula’, ‘formulaic expression’ and ‘formulaic paragraph’ into their sub‐consciousness. The number of episodes in an oral folk tale is proportionate to the number of characters presented in the beginning. An impromptu narrator should prepare total episodes in proportion to the number of characters. The ‘episode’, a basic text unit structure, determines the whole content and theme of an oral folk tale by combining independent units. In this case, the whole content and theme of a work demonstrates various changes according to the personal intentions of the narrator.
