In this study, the inhibitory effects of high salinity on biological perchlorate and nitrate reduction were investigated in flask batch tests and fixed biofilm reactor. Biological perchlorate and nitrate reduction rates at 1.5% and 3% NaCl were lower than 0% NaCl in batch tests. When salt concentrations in the feed were gradually increased from 0% to 3% NaCl, 10mg/L of perchlorate was completely reduced at 2% NaCl in a fixed biofilm reactor. However, at 3% NaCl, perchlorate reduction was significantly inhibited and perchlorate reduction rate was average 28.4% in a fixed biofilm reactor. Perchlorate and nitrate were reduced simultaneously in the presence of perchlorate(1mg/L ClO4-) and nitrate(66.4mg/L NO3-) even at 1.5% NaCl in a fixed biofilm reactor. Although perchlorate could not be measured by IC due to the interference of high salinity at 3% NaCl, nitrate reduction was inhibited and nitrate reduction rate was average 53.9% at 3% NaCl in a fixed biofilm reactor.
