Evidentiality categories and functions have long been the focus of linguisticstudy since the early 20th century when Boas and Sapir came up withthe notion. Among researchers there have been different opinions onits definition, terminology, and its relationship with other grammaticalcategories. Evidentiality is proved a universal phenomenon of humanlanguages, though different languages have different coding systems for it.
It is necessary to clarify the relationship between evidentiality and othergrammatical categories, such as its relationship with mood, especiallywith modality. Both mood and modality are two grammatical categoriesconveying attitudes based on information sources which are both objectiveand subjective. One of the main concerns of evidentiality study is thecredibility of information sources. This suggests a multi-lateral interaction,which indicates the non-linearity of human language. But only oneperspective has been adopted in most of the existing linguistic researcheson evidentiality. Adopting a non-linear approach, this paper takes Dauras an example to study how evidentiality, mood and modality are multilaterallyintertwined.
