This paper proposes a clausal structure of English associated with the sentential negator not and explores some consequences of this proposal mainly in the area of VP Ellipsis (VPE). It argues for the categorial status of the sentential not as an XP element placed in the specifier of NegP, and for encliticization of it to a preceding finite auxiliary verb. Then it accounts for the asymmetry between auxiliary and main verbs with respect to their raising over the sentential not. Crucial to this account is the postulation of the null auxiliary verb 0do, which is realized as the dummy auxiliary verb do when stranded. It also dispenses with Affix Hopping and derives the traditional do-support effect. Besides this theoretical achievement, the results obtained bring about utmost simplicity in stating VPE in English by eliminating the sentential not from the set of VPE licensors--VPE is licensed only by the first overt auxiliary verb.
