It has been assumed that the interpretive effects of Merge are supposedto be captured in terms of some local context of a Merging operation. Inthis paper it is claimed that the interpretive effects of Merge should becaptured not only syntactically or morphologically but alsophonologically or semantically (functionally as well) in terms of non‐determinism proposed in Yang (2013). According to non‐determinism, Ipropose there should be recognized three types of interpretive effects interms of LF and PF effects: (a) LF‐PF Interpretive Effect, (b) PF‐onlyInterpretive Effect, and (c) LF‐only Interpretive Effect. For the theory ofthree types of interpretive effects according to non‐determinism, it isnaturally assumed that the notion of edge feature (EF) of Chomsky(2008) has to be eliminated (Yang 2013). Hence, my non‐deterministictheory of interpretive effects works with the null hypothesis of Merge asproposed in Yang (2013). Given the null hypothesis of Merge for theinterpretive effects of Merge, ambiguity or multiplicity of the interpretiveeffects per Merge may be systematically captured. At the same time, amovement theory based on free Merge along with proper interpretiveeffects is suggested and investigated.
