The purpose of this study is examining the various issues in pre-modern Chinese character novel through the history. The three periods of end-Shilla & early-Goryeo, 17th century and 19th century were focused because they produced conspicuous achievement in the history of Chinese character novel in Korea. The issues in each period were explored in association with the relationship between Korean novels in Chinese character and Chinese novels. This was to consider the making of universality and identity of the Chinese character novel history in Korea into an issue by shedding new light on them from the perspective of East Asian culture area while differentiating the issues by period. In the early period, Chinese character novels in Korea had single-line structure in the form of biography and they were in the various forms of legend, tale and ghost story. It is suggested in this study that it is necessary to understand the Chinese character novels of 17th century (which is called the ‘period of novel’) together with war and 16th century in consideration of the driving power of underlying narration and the switch in style. For the late Joseon period, it is mentioned that the issue should be the methodology of communication between authors and readersin within society and culture in view of the heroic martial novel character of full-length Chinese character novel at this time and the conventionality of epic literature. In addition, it is suggested that it is required to approach the discussion on the relationship of subject between Korean novels and Chinese novels from the aspect of methodology beyond the study on the level of cross-cultural study. This is a suggestion to overcome the limitation in data of Korean Chinese character novel by confirming the objective position of Korean Chinese character novel and comparing it with Chinese novel while expanding the scope of discussion on Korean Chinese character novel.
