This study aims to examine the attitude toward Japan of GiJae(企齋) Shin Gwanghan(申光漢), who lived from 1484 to 1555, and to identify its formative background.
For this purpose, this study selected and researched Shin Gwanghan(申光漢)’s remarks recorded in Chosun Dynasty Chronicles and his works in Gijae-jip(企齋集), the collection of his works. The research was triggered by the difference in the attitudes toward Japan between Shin Gwanghan and other shcolars as he held very equal and friendly attitude toward Japan unlike a majority of scholars who were negative toward it.
This study attributed the formative background of Shin Gwanghan’s open and friendly attitude to the influences from his family line and his academic school. That is to say, Shin Gwanghan’s attitude had been heavily influenced by his grandfather, Beomong(泛翁) Shin Sookju(申叔舟) and his teacher, Mojae(慕齋) Kim Ahngook(金安國).
It is unfortunate that only limited resources are available to examine Shin Gwanghan’s attitude toward Japan, which remains as the limitation of this study. For further studies, it is necessary to find and refer to more resources to encourage more academic discussions. It is expected that more specific and objective examination will be made possible regarding Chosun-Japan exchanges at that time and Shin Gwanghan’s attitude toward Japan if more works by 16th-century scholars and Japanese documents are found and researched.
