In 1895, John Fryer launched a campaign of New Age Novels activities to abolish “the three most serious social ills (opium, stereotyped writing and foot-binding)”. And issued essay notice with case respectively in Chinese and English in Globe Magazine and Chinese Recorder, the different voices and opinions of which are also the origins of this paper. Meanwhile based on the archives of Fryer, the paper interprets the “double standard” and some other related doubts in the case as the followings: the relationship between Fryer’s dual role (as science enlightener and missionary) and the “double standard” of the essay notice with case; why was his stereotype of Chinese lack of innovation? Why were the most distinguished essays kept being published? Why did Fryer hurry away from China to the United States? Through the above interpretation reach to Fryer new understanding.
