This article reviews in details the recent debate on the role of German historians and historiography encompassing the Weimar Republic, the third Reich and the early Federal Republic, which culminated in the German Historical Congress in Frankfurt of 1998. Among those historians involved in the racial and genocidal policies of Nazi regime, Werner Conze and Theodor Schieder were the central figures of the debate. Summing up the latest processes of the controversies, this article points out that the debate reflected not only continuities of the German historiography in spite of its generational change, but also latent conflicts between the established historians and non- mainstream ones. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze characteristics of the German historian community, particularly as a traditional corporation(Zunft), as well as the continuities of the German historiography from the perspectives of sociology of knowledge.
