The purpose of the present study is to investigate how much emphasis is put on the reading ability and what kinds of skills are measured with the reading texts in high school English tests. For that purpose the study analyzed 30 English tests administered in ten high schools, focusing on the proportion of test items made and the skills measured with the reading texts. According to the result, the proportion of the test items made with the reading texts was high across all the tests and the kinds of skills measured with the reading texts were mostly limited to language skills. In addition, it was also found that despite the common features among all the tests, there was also a wide variation among the tests even for the same grade, reflecting lack of criteria for test construction. Based on the results, the study suggests that in order for the tests to achieve more beneficial backwash and foster the reading ability in the students successfully enough, some criteria for test construction must be established and the necessary training and guideline must be provided to the teachers.
