This study investigates the effect of mood on group decision-making in terms of polarization. The design of the study was a 3(mood: positive, negative, vs. neutral) * 2(decision: individual vs. group) mixed design, with mood being a between-subject variable and decision being a within-subject variable. Participants were 184 undergraduate students from two universities located in Seoul, South Korea. For the purpose of mood manipulation, participants were asked to describe events that aroused the most happiness or the most sad emotional states from their life experiences. They were then asked to record their decision in terms of risk taking. Through ANOVA, it was found that all three hypotheses were supported in statistical significance. First, groups in the neutral mood condition, when presented with a risk inducing choice dilemma, showed a risky shift in their decisions. Second, groups in the happy mood condition did not show a statistically significant shift in their decisions. Last, groups in the sad mood condition became riskier than either group of the other two mood conditions. Two major perspectives can account for mood's effects on depth of information processing. One explanation posits that participants in the sad mood condition processed information centrally, that was elaborate and process information relevant to the task at hand. Happy participants, on the other hand, are believed to be less capable of systematic information processing. The second explanation, motivational in nature, posits that the shift demonstrated in the sad mood condition is a result of the motivation of sad participants to get our of their negative mood state, whereas happy participants are motivated to maintain their mood and avoid complex information processing. The findings are discussed in relation to collectivistic culture including China and East Asia.
