The concern with participation of local residents in tourism policy has continued to grow over the past few decades. Active citizen participation and community engagement in local policymaking such as tourism development has been recognized as method for achieving healthy and sustainable tourism. In this respect, community psychologists has taken interests in sociopolitical control scale as an assessment construct to measure citizens' intrapersonal components of psychological empowerment in relation to policymaking processes. This paper discusses how the participation of local residents in tourism policymaking affects a topic-specific measure of sociopolitical control scale by employing structural equation modeling. The following study provides empirical evidences that a sociopolitical control scale can be applied to the study of tourism policymaking as a valid measurement tool for psychological empowerment.
