This study aims to examine problems and possible solutions for purchasing business of fishing gears operated by primary fisheries cooperatives in Korea. Purchasing business of fishing gears of primary fisheries cooperatives is one of the most important functions in promoting interests and improving economical and social rights of the members of fisheries cooperatives in Korea. Nevertheless, it has not been working efficiently.
The research offers suggestions in two categories; a purchasing business expansion plan that can be done by primary fisheries cooperatives and supporting measures for purchasing business of National Federation Fisheries Cooperatives. In the first category, the study suggests three solutions. First, it is required to expand dividends to the members of fisheries cooperatives by making the best use of purchasing business of fishing gears. Seconds, it is also desirable for the cooperatives to operate purchasing business according to the various types of markets and conditions faced by primary fisheries cooperatives. Third, it is needed to increasing convenience in purchasing business through a refund and reservation system.
There are also three solutions in the second category. First, it is needed to raise commission rates for primary fisheries cooperatives in cooperative purchasing systems. Seconds, it is very important to find out new fishing gear items for National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives purchasing business. Third, it is required to include the use of fish box to purchasing business by utilizing standardization of marine products in port markets of primary fisheries cooperatives.
