This study examines the determinants of movie survival time in the Korean movie exhibition market using survival analysis. From the empirical analysis on the weekly Top 15 wide-release movies from January 2008 to December 2009, we find that the word-of-mouth effect is an important determinant of movie run-length in the Korean movie exhibition market. The number of opening screens is shown to have a positive relation with movie survival time. The impact of origin of country is not significant when variables like opening screens are controlled in the estimation, while the descriptive statistics shows that on average local movies were played longer than foreign movies in the Korean movie exhibition market. High season is appeared to be negatively associated with movie survival time.
