The purposes of this study were to compare abductor hallucis (AbdH) muscle activity during toe curl exercises according to the position of the interphalangeal joint (IPJ). Fifteen healthy subjects with neutral foot were recruited for this study. All subjects performed toe curl exercises with a towel while maintaining the IPJ in flexion (position 1) and extension (position 2). Three sets of toe curls for five second periods in each position were performed and surface electromyography (EMG) activity was recorded from three muscles (AbdH, tibialis anterior, peroneous longus). EMG activity was normalized to the value of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (%MVIC). The EMG activities according to IPJ position were compared using a paired t-test. The results showed that the EMG activity of AbdH muscles significantly increased during toe curl exercises with IPJ extension compared to flexion (p<.05). However, the EMG activity of the tibialis anterior and peroneus longus muscles was not significantly affected by the change in position of IPJ (p>.05). These results suggest that toe curl exercise with towel should be performed with the IPJ in extension, to strengthen intrinsic muscle in subjects with overuse injuries related to excessive pronation.
