Tanz theater is the dance made by German dancers who combined an avant-garde drama and modern dance of America.This study deals with Reinhild Hoffmann(1943～ ) who is one of the representatives of German expressionism. Hoffmann, together with Pina Baush, is the remarkable person who made the golden ages of the German expressionism which had been created by Kurt Jooss. The basic object of this study is to think about how Hoffmann had found the new possibilities of the modern dance and how great a choreographer, who made the works of high completion, she is, The first, we will think about the life of the Hoffmann herself, the background of the German expressionism in dance and The Bremen Theater in this study. The second, I divided her works(1977～1989) into three parts, periodically and considered them respectively. The third, we will study the matter about the characteristics of the Hoffmann‘s works in three points of view. Hoffmann had made the drama of social problems which shows the theme of conflict and contradiction of those days. She changed The Bremen Theater into fantastic world describing the stage visually and effectively, And also she pursued the expressionism mixing her works with act and dancing. As a result, her works presented a new possibilities of the modern dance in German and it made her works highly completed and sound ones, compared with others. From the above, we can infer the fact that Hoffmann is placed as a forerunner of modern dance in German.
