This study identifies the characteristics of hotels that are awarded the Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor and investigates the determinants for receiving the Certificate of Excellence to provide guidelines for getting the most out of online reviews. Information about the Certificate of Excellence, number of online reviews, bubble rating, free Wi-Fi offering, green leader recognition, and average room price for 1,036 hotels in the major cities (i.e., Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York City) in the United States was collected using a web scraping technique from TripAdvisor.com. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the determinants for receiving the Certificate of Excellence, and the results showed that free Wi-Fi service followed by the bubble rating and the number of guest online reviews significantly predict the possibility of receiving the certificate. However, the average room price did not contribute to the possibility of receiving the certificate. The findings of this study help hotel managers by providing information on how the award is granted and guidelines on how to receive better online reviews and improve a hotel’s reputation.
