In 1952, the ‘Pilhwa’ of the “Free World” was a collection of ideological reasons for freedom of art creation and press oppression. Also, it is necessary to pay attention to the artist’s aspect that Kim Gwang-ju’s novel world was changed by this event.
It was because of the Minister of Public Affairs that the case was changed from the composition of the author to the victims to the public power that violated the freedom of the press. He abused his power by confiscating the magazine “Free World” and stamping the official letter notifying him to write about Kim Gwang-ju’s suffering incident in each newspaper.
Newspapers criticized Kim Gwang-ju’s ‘Pilhwa’ as a false administration against the freedom of art creation and the press. On the other hand, Munchong transformed the pressure of public power on creative freedom into a vulgar writer-versus-frame. This is the earliest event when an arts organization became a slave to public power.
From an artist’s point of view, this event would have been the decisive moment in which the nihilistic color seen in Kim Gwang-ju’s first collection of work proceeded to later synism and ‘muhyeob’novels. Kim Gwang-ju’s internal shock was significant. Kim Gwang-ju failed to complete his first novel and expressed “I hate you” as ‘a bitch son’. Eventually, the ‘Minister of Public Affairs’ in the work was erased and disillusionment dominated the artist.
The betrayal, defeat, distrust and despair that Kim Gwang-ju felt at the time were deep and wide. Kim Gwang-ju extremely hated power and groups. However, due to the agreement between the Munchong and the Ministry of Public Affairs, it was impossible to affirm or deny it. This situation may have led Kim Gwang-ju’s work to defeatism and nihilism.
