Purpose: The purposes of present study are to estimate incidence rates of head kicks (HKs) and concussions and to find latent risk factors of the concussion among female middle school sparring-Taekwondo competitors.
Method: Data were collected from two sparring-Taekwondo competitions in 2018 via a prospective cohort study design. Ninety-one (mean age=14.7, SD=0.99) out of 375 competitors, who have received a HK from their opponent during matches, were interviewed within 10-20 minutes right after the match. To analyze the differences between potential risk factors and concussion rate, independent t-test, χ2-test, and binary logistic regression were utilized at the α≦.05.
Results: A total of 243 HKs occurred to the 91 competitors. The incidence rates of HKs and concussions were 15.0 (CI: 12.2-17.9) and 5.3 (CI: 3.5-7.1) per 100 athlete-exposures, respectively. The case of concussion occurred approximately 35.2% out of total 91 HK receivers. We have not found the significant difference between the potential risk factors such as past history of concussion and recognition of HK and concussion rates. Only 25% (8 HK receivers) showed post-concussion syndromes at the time of interview. The most common symptom of post-concussion syndrome was feeling dizziness. There was no case of concussion with loss of consciousness and loss of memory function in this study. Overall 89% of 91 HK receivers reported that they have been trained for blocking skills and defensive actions against the HK. However, these defensive training were not effective for 60 HK receivers at the real matches (66% out of 99 HK receivers did nothing at the time of the receiving HK).
Conclusion: The incidence rates of HKs and concussions for the participants tare high in this study. However, the rate of HKs do not increase compared to the single scoring system in 2001. The effect of a deferential scoring system may differ depending on the age groups or gender. More research is required in order to measure more validate rates of HKs and concussions.
