The aspects of the Ulleungdo society in Japanese colonial period can be seen through newspapers, magazines, and publications of the Government General of Korea. Especially, the newspaper is the medium that can convey the aspect of the events developed in Ulleungdo and its transformation. Since Ulleungdo was not a well-known island, each newspaper first introduced the history of Ulleungdo and introduced Ulleungdo"s topography, and population. Reports on Ulleungdo"s history and specialty products are roughly the same for every newspaper.
Ulleungdo society, which can be grasped through newspaper articles, can be largely informed about the economic situation, educational institutions, transportation and communication, harbor status, religion, disaster and relationship between Korean people and Japanese people. In the paper, we can see the increase of fishery population, the exported goods, the commercial and trade business population, Koreans who cooperated with Japan, the number of schools, and the frequency of ship operations in Ulleungdo.
During the Japanese colonial rule, Korean cultivated silk and special crops and exported cattle to Japan. Exports were primarily primary products, and commerce and trade were dominated by Japanese. The most important position in the economy of Ulleungdo is fishing, which mainly exported squid, abalone, mackerel. The ships were operated mainly between Pohang and Ulleungdo, Busan and Ulleungdo, Ulleungdo and Sakai Port in Japan. Most of the Koreans were employed by Japanese, so when fishing was in trouble, they had to rely on the Japanese loan system. As the vicious circle of poverty recurred due to overpopulation, residents migrated to Manchuria and miners, but their lives did not improve. Ulleungdo in the colonial period was also a history that was struck by the invasion like the mainland of Korea.
