This paper examines the descriptions of polysemous passive verbs listed in the Standard Korean Dictionary. The polysemous passive verb have the usage as the passive verb and as the intransitive verb. In the current Standard Korean Dictionary, there is adopted a method of treating as ‘polysemy’ which shows the usage as the passive verb and the usage as the intransitive verb. This may be because the fact that the usage as an intransitive verb is closely related to the usage as a passive verb. Therefore, I tried to clarify the basis of the dictionary description by explaining how the usage as the intransitive verb has ‘semantic relation’ with the usage as the passive verb. There are two possible explanations for the usage as an intransitive verb. First, ‘-i-’ affix combined with the usage as intransitive verb is regarded as intransitive verbification affix rather than passive affix. Second, it is seen as a verb that acquires the usage as an intransitive verb through a process of independent extension of meaning from the passive verb. In the case of the former, it is difficult to accept that the allomorphy is the same, although the passive affix and the intransitive verbification affix are different. If we accept it, it should be described as a homonym rather than a polysemy because the components are different in terms of word formation. On the other hand, in the latter case, the usage as an intransitive verb explains that the meaning is expanded from the passive to acquire its own meaning. In this case, the usage of transitive verb and intransitive verb will be described as polysemy since they are considered to be of the same origin. Therefore, the reason for describing usage of intransitive verb and usage of passive verb under one head word in Korean dictionary is etymologically because the usage of the corresponding intransitive verb seems to be derived from passive verb.
