The wanderers in Jung Cheol’s and Park Mokweol’s poems travel toward our last shelter, nature without a backward glance. From a positive viewpoint, the wanderers in Korean poems live a very much acceptable life. At the same time, on a negative side, they are escapists who never resist any conflict and oppression. Unlike the wanderers in the Korean poems, the wanderers in Yeats’s and Heaney’s poems talk about who they are like and why they cannot but become wanderers. All through his life, Yeats shows his wandering spirit as a heroic and privileged Anglo-Irish by identifying with heroic wanderers like Oisin, Cuchulain and Oedipus in his poems. In contrast, Heaney, in Station Island and Sweeney Astray, identifies with the legendary figure Sweeney who falls down to be a miserable wanderer by denying the authority of the religion. Meanwhile, all the wanderers in the Korean and Irish poems have one characteristic in common, that is, freedom of the artistic spirit.
