This experiment was conducted in order to understand the usability of Salix gracilistyla as cosmetics. For this purpose, S. gracilistyla extract was extracted with 60% ethanol at 60 oC for 3 hours, 95% ethanol at room temperature for 24 hours, distilled water at 100 oC for 3 hours and distilled water at 60 oC for 6 hours. Each antioxidative effect of extract was evaluated. As a result, S. gracilistyla extract contained a large amount of polyphenols and flavonoids. In addition, DPPH radical scavenging activity also showed a high concentration-dependent antioxidant activity. Among them, the best results were obtained when the extract was extracted with 95% ethanol at room temperature for 24 hours. To address a clinical trial was conducted for eight weeks targeting the total number of nineteen middle-aged women. And the detailed changes were observed variables concerning skin surface. As a result, in experimental group, there was statistical significance on facial skin: increase in moisture contents (p<.01), increase in sebum contents (p<.05), decrease in erythema index (p<.05), decrease in melanin index (p<.01), and improvement in skin tone (p<.05). In addition, And there was a statistically significant on neck skin: increase in moisture contents (p<.01), an increase in sebum contents (p<.05), a decrease in melanin index (p<.001), and an improvement in skin tone (p<.01), Thus, S. gracilistyla extract showed anti-inflammatory and anti-melanin activity, and clinical trials showed significant changes, increase in moisture and sebum contents, decrease melanin and erythema index, which proved highly likely to be developed as a functional cosmetics materials.
