This study analyzed 174 Korean master’s and doctoral theses from searching the public academic database with the keyword “classification of constitution” to understand how the key classifications of a person’s physical and psychological makeup—their constitution—have developed over time. Although many people agree that constitutions vary, the theory of an innate constitution still has low reliability since there is no objective, standardized classification method. The most frequent classification for the constitution in Korean studies is in Sasang constitutional medicine, followed by Ayurveda and Yinyang Wuxing. The most active field for the classification of the constitution is Korean traditional medicine. Because of the purpose of their research, most previous studies were descriptive, with measurements or surveys. Similarly, based on the study methods, theoretical approaches(i.e., literature reviews, validations of survey questions, and analyses of constitution status) were the most common forms of studies. Both studies based on traditional classifications and studies attempting to identify more objective classification methods have been steadily increasing in number. This study has limitations in that it differs from complete studies on the “classification of the constitution,” including those found in academic journal publications. However, it has significance in that the trend analysis for the “classification of the constitution” shows that such studies are being conducted first in Korea.
