A summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Trump was held in Hanoi, Vietnam on February 27-28, 2019, but failed to reach agreement. On April 10, 2019, North Korea held the 4th General Assembly of the 7th Term of the Korean Workers" Party Central Committee and ordered the whole party, the whole nation and the whole people to rise against the UN"s economic sanction.
This study examines the impacts of North Korea"s harsh political and economic realities on the lives of its people. To that end, using North Korean novels, it analyzes patterns of tension between North Korea"s political language and everyday language Specifically, it analyzed the texts of Kim Ok-sun"s novel Alumni and Ryeom Ye-seong"s novel I Love You.
Kim Ok-sun"s Alumni describes the tensing pattern between the memory of the ‘March of Suffering, Forced March’ people and the current lives. North Korean women"s ordinary lives are typified by Han Song-i (who has a strong personality). In contrast, Jo Myeong-suk is portrayed as a typical hard-working hero of North Korean novels. The heroic Jo Myeong-suk presents North Korea"s official political ideology, while the private, domestic Han Song demonstrates North Koreans’ ordinary lives. The two confront tightly each other, yet Han Song-i is being gradually impressed by Jo Myeong-suk. The North Korean people"s way of life, expressed by Han Song-i, is noteworthy. Through Han Song-i, the life of "self-rehabilitation" that relativizes Revitalizes the state"s organizations is described.
Ryeom Ye-seong"s novel I Love You describes two characters conflicting over the development of "our-style" perming chemicals. Hong Yu-jeong (the novel’s first-person narrator) does her best to develop "our-style" perming chemicals which are competitive worldwide. Kim Jeong-in, who studied overseas, insists on the development of world-leading perming chemicals. Through the two"s competition, North Korea"s official ideology aims to build scientific, technological, economic, civilizational, and socialist power. Hong Yu-jeong, impressed by Kim Jeong-in, embraces efforts to lead the world. This novel shows the conflicting pattern between Juche ideology and the rest of the world. The two conflicting discourses confirm that North Korean society is gradually preparing to communicate with the world.
North Korean"s state organization demands collectivist mandate from North Korean people. North Korean people are struggling to preserve the logic of life and private area. The two suggests that ‘conversion into a human being with self-innovation and self-control" is positively understood to be connected with democratic people"s personality."
