This study examined the relationship between cognitive and functional mobility affected by aging by classifying male and female elderly people into normal and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) groups. The subjects were 271 male and female elderly people at the Korea Version of Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-K) to 119 normal male (77.4±4.6 yrs), 73 normal female (76.8±4.0 yrs) and 29 MCI male (78.8±6.6 yrs), and 30 MCI female (78.3±5.0 yrs). The functional mobility were Sit and stand, Time up & go, 5m habitual walk and 5m maximum walk. As a result, MMSE-K showed significantly lower MCI male (18.4±7.1 points) and MCI female (20.4±2.9 points) than normal male (26.9±1.6 points) and female (28.0±1.9 points) respectively (p<.05). There was no significant difference between the two groups of male and female in Sit and stand. However, the Time up & go, 5m habitual and the 5m maximum walk showed a significant difference (p<.01). In addition, old (75-84 yrs old) who are young old (65 to 74 yrs) normal male showed significant degradation in all but habitual walking (p<.05), MCI male tend to decrease. In comparison, the elderly in the latter phase of female showed significant functional degradation in the 5 m walk, whereas the elderly in the latter phase of MCI indicated a significant decrease in Sit and stand and Time up & go (p<.05). The conclusion suggested the possibility of decreased cognitive function as the functional mobility of MCI elderly people decreased, and suggested the need for exercise habits to prevent dementia in normal elderly people.
