The so-called Possessive Marker /s/ is ambiguous between a possession reading and a relation reading, and the possession reading disappears when it co-occurs with a complex nominal. With a view to explaining this phenomenon, this paper starts with the assumption that there are two types of /s/: the Possessive Marker and the Genitive Case Marker. After pointing out that English is one of those languages in which the Possessive Marker co-occurs with a zero Possessee, I propose that in English the zero Possessee is an affix that is attached to a word, but not to a phrase. On the other hand, the Genitive Case marker does not co-occur with the zero Possessee but with D, so that it can co-occur with any type of nominals. In the course of providing an argument for this proposal, I claim that both the Possessive Marker and the Genitive Case Marker are subject to the same phonological condition: they are realized as either a strong form or a weak form, depending on whether they are followed by a phonologically non-null constituent or a phonologically null constituent.
