The regional order in East Asia is in transition. The American postwar hegemonic leadership of East Asia is giving way to geopolitical competition between the United States and China. This essay explores the logics of international order that illuminate East Asia"s past, present, and future. During the American-led era, East Asian order was premised on bilateral security ties, regional multilateral institutions, and open trade relations. With the rise of China, East Asia has transitioned toward a system of "dual hegemony" in which both superpowers offer leadership and compete for influence and dominance. The distribution of power in the region is changing as many countries in both Northeast and Southeast Asia are increasingly tied to China for trade and investment and to the United States for security. How will this transitional order manage this growing dynamic of balance of power and competitive hegemony? The essay highlights the dangers of war and instability and also identifies ways in which both China and the United States will want to restrain their competition and manage the increasingly complex economic and security interdependence across the region.
