This paper concerns cultural identity in contemporary Korea by analysing five films based on a popular traditional folk tale, Ch'unhyangjon (The Tale of Ch'unhyang), three from the South and the other two from the North. As a cultural text, post-war Korean cinema vividly exposes the coexistence of political discontinuity and cultural continuity in contemporary Korea. Gender, class, and nationhood are directly pertinent to defining Korean cultural identity. Among them, Ch'unhyangjon features gender and class as the central subjects. The treatment of the two interrelated subjects in the film texts is tied specifically to the oppositional ideologies of the communist North and the capitalist South. As I intend to show in this paper, the film adaptations of Ch'unhyangj6n feature the disparate interests of contemporary Koreans as a divided nation, and their differences can be attributed to their conflicting perceptions of society and history.
