This article deals with the public perception of a number of material sites in Seoul. By relating, both diachronically and synchronically, the fate of specific monuments, some light can be shed on the development of modem nationalism and changes in national identity in (South) Korea.
Spurred by the heated debates in Korean society over the demolition of the Government-General building, a closer look was taken at the history of the main palace of the Chosen Dynasty, Kyongbok Palace, and how its public perception changed from being a dynastic symbol during the Taewon'gun era (1865-1873) to a national symbol since the colonial period. This evolution was set in motion by the construction of the Government -General building, a symbol of colonial power, in front of the palace. While a former symbol of dynastic power became a national icon, the Independence Arch lost its national splendor. Meant by its initiators as a national beacon for the people of Korea, it was soon demoted as a parochial monument for Westernized reformers in the late nineteenth century.
The symbolic fate of these three monuments is closely linked to changing public attitudes to Korea's history and to ongoing developments in Korea's national identity.
