Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of obesity on adolescent development and to promote the development of healthy adolescents. For this purpose, the effects of obesity on adolescent development (academic achievement and psychosocial adjustment) ware examined. It was found that parental attitudes and self-esteem are able to mediated these effects. Methods: This study utilized data from the “Comprehensive Survey of Korean Children and Adolescents” by the Korean Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs. To this end, the cases of 1,890 middle and high school students were analyzed based on data from this survey. An analysis of the results of this study were verified with SPSS 21.0 and Amos 18.0. Results: First, based on differences in obesity distribution according to adolescent characteristics, it was found that there was a difference in obesity distribution due to gender and school grades. Second, in terms of the differences in obesity distribution according to household characteristics, there were found to be differences in obesity distribution according to family type, household type and household income. Third, obesity was found to have no direct effect on the psychosocial development of adolescents. Parental attitude and self-esteem were found to mediate the effects of obesity on adolescent development. Conclusion: Therefore, it can be seen that there is a need for self-esteem improvement programs and intervention for obese adolescents in the social welfare practice field for the development of healthy adolescents. It can also be seen that these programs must include both parental and peer education.
