The Buddha statue group in Seokguram in Tohamsan(mountain) in Gyeongju is an outstanding cultural heritage that represents the status of the history of Buddhist sculptures of Korea to the extent that it is referred to as the best masterpiece in East Asian Buddhist art. In this paper, while reviewing several issues regarding the historical background of Seokguram such as the period of construction, the main constructor, the purpose of construction, and those Buddhist monks who lived there, for which previous scholars could not come to a consensus in the process of multilateral discussions about the Seokguram Buddha statue group thus far, it was identified that the idea of Uisang's View of Hwaeom School, which was leading the the Buddhist circle at the time, had a great effect on the construction of Seokguram. Thereafter, the relationship between the primary Buddha statue that constitutes the core of the Seokguram Buddha statue group and the Elevenheaded Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva image, the Manjusri Bodhisattva image, and the Samantabhadra Bodhisattva image that form a special image system with the primary Buddha statue and the arrangements of the foregoing were interpreted with the viewpoint of the doctrinal of Hwaeom and grasped in the trend and context of Buddhist history with a view to newly understanding the religious meaning and nature of the foregoing. According to the results, the Seokguram primary Buddha statue is a Dharmakaya Buddha image that completely combines all the natures of the Shakyamuni Buddha image, the Amitabdha Buddha images, and the Vairocana Buddha image. The belief in the dignity of the One Vehicle Thoughts of Hwaeom as a master is surrounding countries in the same period of time. It is expected that through the above discussion, the importance and status of Seokguram can be reconfirmed.
