The purpose of this study is to investigate pragmatic competence on request for Korean students studying English in Korean university. Nine DCT items on request of different situations were provided for 66 students, and they wrote down the answers in English and Korean. In the results of two languages, the students used different strategies depending on situations. First, English responses are dominant in mood derivable, performative, suggestory formula. On the other hand, in Korean, suggestory formula is the most dominant, and mood derivable and query preparatory are followed. Second, in the speaker and hearer equal situation, query preparatory and suggestory formula are dominant in English, while mood derivable and performative are frequent in Korean. Third, in the speaker dominant situation, they are skewed to suggestory formula in English and skewed to suggestory formula and mood derivable in Korean. Fourth, in the hearer dominant situation, the group of female uses only two strategies in English and four strategies in Korean. This study showed the students used different request strategies in English Korean languages in English class. Based on this research, the further research is needed.
