The purpose of this study is to investigate what early childhood teachers can do for newcomers with a different language and cultural background. Denny, a 3-year-old who participated in the study, had just moved to the States and begun to live with his parents due to complicated family situations. As he used to live with his grandparents in Korea, Denny’s grandfather was his secure figure. However, he had to separate from his attachment relationship to his grandfather, which caused tremendous stress to him. In this situation, the researcher intended to look into his family and his adaptation to the classroom through interviews with his parents and observations of the class. A series of interviews widened the understanding of Denny’s family background and his behavior. The results suggest that teachers who work with newcomers of a different culture should put more effort in promoting a sense of attachment with the child, showing sensitivity that responds to the child’s interests and needs, and building a partnership with the child’s family.
