Primary tumors of the mediastinum are rlatively rare, and benign tumors are about four times as common as the malignant tumors. If the symptoms of a mediastinal tumor have been present for more than one year,the likelihood is great that the tumor is benign. The differential diagnosis of mediastinal lesions is difficult because of the large number of anatomic structures contained within this small space and the homogeneity of tissue densities. Although numerous diagnostic technics may be employed, the olcation of the tumor still remains the most fcritical factor in arriving at the correct diagosis. A radiotherapeutic trial is no longer justified in a diagnosis of mediastinal lymphosarcoma and Hodgkin's disease. If the tumor happens to be an early case of Hodgkin's disease with no other idagnostic anifastation, nothing is lost by a thoracotomy, biopsy, or excision. Adequate radical radiotherapy is then instituted and colse follow-up recommended. Here it relates ones on incidence, methods of study and differential diagnosis of mediastinal masses with a review of literature.
