한국 토양균 중에서 항균력이 있는 토양균을 분리하여 균 동정을 실시하였고 생성된 항균성 물질에 관해 실험하였던 바, 이 균주는 Streptomyces속 임이 확인되었고 동정 결과 type species와 일치하는 것은 없었으나 Streptomyces avellaneus와 가장 유사한 것으로 동정되었다. 이 균주에 의해서 생성된 항균성 물질의 항균병위는 사용된 Gram-positive균 중에서 Staphylococcus aureus에만 항균력을 나타내며 사용된 Gram-no-gative균 중에서는 Escherichia에만 항균력을 나타냈다. 이 균주에 의해 생성된 항균성 물질을 ion-ex-change column chromatography 등을 통하여 분리, 정제하였고, 여러가지 물리, 화학적 성질을 관찰해 본 결과 aminoglycoside계통의 항생물질로 인정되었다.
